Wastewater Treatment Systems

Having looked at the wastewater collection system, let us now take a look at where the wastewater is transported by the collection system, the water quality treatment center. When wastewater (influent) reaches a treatment plant it flows through a series of treatment processes designed to make the discharged water (effluent) safe for the receiving stream or body of water. The number of, type and degree of treatment processes is dictated by the uses of the receiving water body. Treated wastewater discharged to a small receiving body used for recreation and municipal drinking water will receive a greater degree of treatment than treated wastewater discharged into a major river.
