MSD builds and promotes green installations that reduce stormwater runoff. MSD administers regulations that require green installations for development disturbing an acre or more.
MSD’s Green Infrastructure Program locates, builds or incentivizes opportunities for green installations. This lessens the need and the cost of additional infrastructure like storage tanks, large pipes and treatment facilities. It also means decreasing sewer overflows and treatment facility stress. These cost-effective solutions not only save MSD customers money, they also improve local waterway quality.
Just a few of these green infrastructure solutions are:
- Bio-retention basins
- Green roads and alleys
- Permeable pavement sidewalks and parking
- Rain gardens and barrels (see our Rain Garden Plant Guide for gardening ideas)
- Vegetated roofs
Interested in incorporating Green Infrastructure in your construction projects? Please read Chapter 18 of the MSD Design Manual: Green Infrastructure, Strategies to Manage Stormwater in Our Community.
MSD offers partnership incentives for qualified green infrastructure projects, and Downspout Disconnection and Urban Reforestation programs. Learn more here.
MSD also offers credits to reduce drainage service charges for property owners who agree to operate green infrastructure best management practices on their properties.
