Stay Safe During Flooding

As heavy rain continues in the Louisville area, it’s important that people take precautions to stay safe. The National Weather Service (NWS) reports that each year, more deaths occur due to flooding than from any other thunderstorm-related hazard. Here are some key safety tips to keep in mind during wet weather.

Driving/Walking

If you approach a road that is flooded, turn around and never attempt to drive or walk through the water. More than half of all flood-related deaths occur when driving into flood water. Though in some cases standing water may not appear high, the force and power of water can easily sweep vehicles and people downstream. The NWS reports just 6 inches of fast-moving flood water can knock over an adult, 12 inches of rushing water can carry away a small car, and 2 feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles.

Be cautious during the evenings when flooding can be harder to recognize.

Homeowners

Homeowners should reduce water usage during heavy rain, since water from dishwashers, and washing machines travels through the combined sewer systems, which is already taxed by large amounts of rainwater from heavy rains. If possible, avoid doing laundry or running the dishwasher.

Homeowners should ensure your home gutters are free of blockages, such as leaves, branches or other debris. Check downspouts attached to your home to make sure they are clear and are directing water away from your house, rather than toward your home.

If your home is experiencing heavy flooding, evacuate. Turn off all utilities at the main switches or valves to help prevent fires and explosions, though only do this if you can do it safely.  Never walk through a flooded basement to turn them off.  Disconnect electrical appliances within the home.

Additional Floodwater Safety Information

Avoid standing water during and after a flood, as it may be electrically charged from underground or downed power lines. Electrocution is the number two cause of flood deaths. Any downed power lines should be reported to LG&E at 502-589-3500.

Avoid letting children or pets play in standing water, which may contain sharp objects or debris, raw sewage, animal or fecal matter, industrial waste or gasoline. After coming in contact with flood water, immediately wash your hands with soap and water.

By taking basic precautions during and after flooding occurs, you can help protect your family and yourself.  For more up-to-date information on flooding in the Louisville area, follow MSD on Twitter and Facebook.
